Wondering What Buffett's Deal Means for Railroad Towns?

When Warren Buffett announced his deal to buy BNSF in early November, I wondered what it meant for Alliance and other railroad towns like it. Reuters gives a clue here. Hint: Buffett's in it for the long haul.

I hope to revisit this subject soon with my own reporting.

Nelson Cuts an Enviable Deal for Nebraska

In case you're wondering if our senators carry any weight on Capitol Hill, Ben Nelson secured a plum deal to cover Nebraska's Medicaid expansion costs as part of his support for health care reform, and other states are none too happy about it.

What do you think? Good politicking or unseemly self-service?

Alliance Resident Davis Makes Congressional Run Official

Speaking of interesting residents, Rebekah Davis made her run for Nebraska's 3rd Congressional District official today. The Lincoln Journal Star has the story here. I remember Davis, who is about seven years younger than I, as an utterly adorable little fireball with a booming singing voice and a stage presence that marked her as a star from the very beginning.

Now 28 and Yale-educated, Davis is sure to prove herself as a force of nature in this race. I hope I'll be able to nail her down for an interview. She apparently is spending an awful lot of time on the road these days. That's understandable when the district she's targeting looks like this.

Go get 'em, Bekah!

Gone but Not Forgotten

Does anyone have photos and/or memories of the old train depot? The Drake Hotel? The Iron Horse? We'd like to post some here -- and any other memories and images of Alliance history.
